Partnerships
We work in partnership with many different groups and people including our local GAA Club Castlehaven, the basketball club in Skibbereen, Skibbereen Sports Centre, Dunmanway swimming pool, West Cork Kickboxing Club and Glandore Harbour Yacht Club. Our partnerships at school offer football, hurling, basketball and many more.
Our Active Flag Slogan is
Run, jump, skip, roll
Keeping active is our goal.
Our slogan winner receiving his prize.
Our slogan Competition
We ran a slogan competition in the school and were very impressed with both the quality and variety of slogans. This made it difficult to decide on a winner.
It was decided to place all entries on a list anonymously, and the staff voted individually to choose the winning slogan.
Below are some of the other entries.
Get up off your seat and move your feet.
Go out and play, don't sit inside all day.
Put on your football gear and get off your rear.
Don't be a bore
Get active and score.
Go for a run, have some fun
Run a mile, gain yourself a smile
Kick a ball or get into a rugby maul.
Being active and healthy is better than being wealthy.
Get active in school and you'll never drool.
Keep it cool and walk to school.
Union Hall National School
The kids are smart, the kids are cool
We have one important creed
Exercise and you'll succeed.
We are an active school, we go to the pool
We will go on a run and have lots of fun
If you like to play ball or prefer to play in the hall
We do it all.
Don't be lazy and sit on your bum
Go outside and go for a run.

Active Flag Surveys
During February and March of 2020, the Active Flag Committee distributed two questionnaires. One was distributed to the pupils from 1st to 6th class. The other questionnaire was sent home to the parents, to be completed and returned to school.
The questionnaires and their results are attached.
The results were analysed and discussed, and it was decided to implement some of the findings.
We were in the process of making some changes; however Covid 19 hindered some of those and in the current environment would make it unsafe to fulfil some great suggestions, such as introducing more speakers and inviting grandparents to sports day.
However, we have purchased new basketballs and recently changed the basketball board and ring.

Physical activity efforts and achievements
Our pupils are very active outside of school as well. Below are some images of our pupils with their achievements.
Also our ASF committee decided to ask some of their trainers to come to our school and give a demonstration of their skills.
Bodyactive with Jonathan Davies
Jonathan Davies gave a 'bodywise' class to all classes on the 27th February 2020.
Jonathan Davies came to the school in early March and gave a session to each of the classes.
Here is a link to the Bodyactive website https://www.bodyactiveskibb.com/
The children learn techniques and the importance of staying active all through your life. Staying active is a lifestyle that, if learnt young, will be beneficial in the long run.

Football
Our local football club, the famous Castlehaven GAA, sends representatives from their club every year to help enhance the children's football skills. James McCarthy is in charge and offers great words of wisdom and also outstanding skills to benefit every child. Both the girls and boys participate in the Sciath na Scol every year and have been very successful for many years.
Hurling
The children practise their hurling skills with Paudie Crowley from O'Donovan Rossa GAA Club in Skibbereen. Some of the children are members of our local St Patrick's Club, which is an amalgamation of local football clubs.
Basketball
Our local basketball club the 'Skibbereen Eagles' visit us and help practise with the children. Some of the children are members of the club also. The children took part in a blitz in the local sport centre in Skibbereen against other schools and enjoyed the experience immensely.
Kickboxing
The children really enjoy the presentation and exhibition made by Tony Stephenson They enjoyed learning a few moves and also about discipline and perseverance.. Some of the children are members of the kickboxing club and enjoyed passing on their experience of being part of the club.
Tom, one of our committee members, sent a letter to his kickboxing trainer Tony Stephenson requesting he come to our school for a demonstration. Tony gave a great demonstration and again some other pupils attending the club showed some of their skills.
Below is an extract from our local paper featuring Tony and his achievements to date.
(KICKBOXING has given two-time world champion Tony Stephenson a lot more than medals and titles.
The sport has changed his life.
At the senior WAKO World Kickboxing Championships in Sarajevo in October, the Bantry fighter (28) won his second gold at this level, in his -69kg category.
This success came ten years after he won his first senior world gold medal, but the latest triumph means a lot more to Tony. The 2019 version of himself is more mature and wiser on and off the mat, and certainly a better kickboxer.
After winning gold in 2019, Tony didn’t feel the need to seek out plaudits, he knows what he has achieved and doesn’t look for the recognition that the 18-year-old Tony craved.)

Dancing
Martina visits the school every Wednesday to teach the children music. Irish traditional dance is taught every year in term 3.
The children also enjoyed sampling other types of dance with our local dance studio in Skibbereen. Again some of the children attend lessons in the dance studio and enjoyed showing their moves to their classmates.
Sailing
At the end of every school year the school participates in a sailing week organised by school and the local sailing club "Glandore Harbour Yacht club".
The children learn life saving skills as well as sailing skills. These skills are put into good use over the summer months, when children are on holidays or sail and swim locally.

Myross Rowing Club
Our local club is Myross Rowing Club. Our 1st and 2nd class teacher Ms. Deasy is a member and coaches children from the school.
Ms Deasy qualified to go to Hong Kong in October 2019 and her team came an unbelievable 10th in the world in their race. We are very proud of Ms Deasy's achievement.
Ms Deasy teachers 1st & 2nd class and also trains underage rowers in our local rowing club Myross rowing club. Some of our students are lucky enough to have Ms Deasy as their trainer.
